Frailty: Falling

Upon leaving the house on Christmas day
To walk in crisp air
She stepped down
And found the descent
Edging past her 80th birthday
To be a split-second slip
And a long free fall down into back pain
White winter blindness
Searing into nights’ waking.

Cooking or eating savory cuisine
Was never a focus
But now, frailty, stolen wind,
A hermetic seal upon movements
Leaves her stiff, more sedentary,
and depleted of zest.

Days, melted down metals
oozing over chairs
in front of screens,
Sculpt posture
Now sluggish and tilted forward.

“Amazing how one moment can change your life forever.”

Frail
